Wonderful walks, good fishing and swimming in the river. 1¼ miles to Lambley viaduct, 7 miles to Haltwhistle, the centre of Britain, with a large outdoor leisure centre; 8 miles to Alston, the highest market town in England, and the location for the BBC production of Oliver Twist. Also home to the South Tynedale Railway for children and adults. 10 miles to Hadrian’s Wall. 1 mile to the nearest pub at Knarsdale. There is also a children's playground which may entice your children to cycle to the pub! When you have whetted your whistle there why not pay a visit to the church next door and have a good sing - it has wonderful acoustics!
The historic town of Hexham with its beautiful Hexham Abbey is half an hour away, and Newcastle & Gateshead, and Northumberland and its Coast, about an hour. The A686 from Alston over Hartside into the Eden Valley and theThe Lake District is billed in several publications as England’s most scenic drive.
The old railway line from Alston to Haltwhistle provides a wonderful level cycle track (apart from a few nasty steps around the magnificent Lambley viaduct).
Featherstone Castle, a few miles away, is one of our favourite haunts, with wonderful tree-filled grounds bordering the river, places to picnic, watch salmon leap, and an easy circular walk along both sides of the river.
